Hampyeong is blessed with a beautiful natural environment where mountains and rivers live in harmony and filled with fertile land, so it is well known for affluence and peacefulness. It also has a time-honored history and cultural tradition as the best area in Honam.

- Background
Since the earth with a population of 5 billion has the best living condition for human beings, plants and animals, human beings adapted themselves to nature and maintained the order of nature before the Industrial Revolution. However, after the Industrial Revolution, urbanization and industrialization heavily reliant on science and technology changed the world into a mass-production and mass-consumption society causing climate change, depletion of the ozone layer, acid rain, deforestation, exhausted natural resources and reduced biodiversity, destroying the balance of nature, which resulted in various global environmental problems.
Serious environmental destruction took place in specific areas in the past, but it has spread throughout the entire globe threatening all of mankind in the 21st century.
Accordingly, the Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil in 1992 adopted Agenda 21, an action plan for the 21st century, in order to realize a sustainable society.
Agenda 21 adopted at the Rio Conference pushed for the implementation of Local Agenda 21 befitting regional characteristics as most resolutions to various environmental problems are rooted in regional activities.
In this regard, Hampyeong-gun which still has a sound natural environment because of underdevelopment in the wake of a regional industrial imbalance since the 1960s, is pursuing Green Hampyeong 21 in order to preserve its nature, create a clean environment with fresh air, pure water and green forests, improve the quality of life of residents and realize a future-oriented green Hampyeong where future generations can have hope for the future instead of being preoccupied with the introduction of contaminating plants and reckless development.
